As a bridal beauty expert in this business for more than 30 years, I’ve seen the good and the bad and have learned the best ways to be prepared for a smooth day. Here are my five common bridal makeup mistakes—and how to avoid them.

1. Skipping the Makeup Trial

I can’t understate how important a makeup trial is. Not just for the bride, but for the makeup artist, too. It helps you test different looks, ensures your makeup complements your dress and venue lighting, and prevents any surprises on the big day. Without a trial, you might end up with a look you don’t love—and no time to fix it

2. Overdoing the Powder

Many brides want a matte, shine-free look, but too much powder can settle into fine lines and make skin look dry. Instead, I like to use lightweight, buildable, and hydrating products along with a dewy setting spray or a light touch of translucent powder just in areas prone to oiliness. This is also the best approach for touchups throughout the day so you’re not creating thick, cakey layers of powder.

3. Not Prepping Your Skin Properly

Your makeup will only look as good as the skin underneath! Start a hydrating skincare routine months before your wedding, get regular facials, and avoid last-minute new skincare products that could cause breakouts or irritation.

4. Ignoring the Weather

For summer weddings, waterproof foundation, mascara, and eyeliner are highly recommended. In colder months, you want to focus on extra hydration so your skin doesn’t look dry. Don’t forget to drink lots of water!

5. Forgetting a Touch-Up Kit

Even the best makeup needs a little refreshing. Pack a lipstick, blotting papers, and mini setting spray so you look flawless from vows to the last dance. Many of my brides request that I stay at the venue until the reception begins so I can touch up their makeup, and it’s something I’m always happy to do!

My experience has prepared me to avoid all of these potential accidents. It is my number one priority to deliver a smooth, stress-free experience so you and your wedding party feel heard, beautiful and special on your big day.
